Patterns teach children to notice order

A red-blue-red-blue activity looks simple, but it trains children to recognize repetition and make small predictions.

Start with two choices

Use two colors or two shapes first. When the child is confident, add a third choice or change the order.

Say the pattern out loud

Invite the child to name the colors or shapes while arranging them. Hands, eyes and language working together supports memory.

Connect to numbers later

After the child understands patterns, connect the activity to counting, such as one red, one blue, repeat.
